The statistical calculations you should know about and be able to perform for the exam.
Outline of this e-learning module
As GP's, we are confronted by statistics on a daily basis. How do we interpret test results in the terms of Sensitivity/Specificity? From the journals, what are RCT's, case control studies and what do the terms such as relative risk mean?
Unless you are going to be involved in research when your knowledge should be deeper, the majority of us just need a working knowledge of these terms and be able to apply them in our everyday practice. The MRCGP AKT exam goes out to test this knowledge.
I hope that this e-learning site will help. Please read the following sections below to get the most of the site.
1) Calculations: You will need to be able to carry out some elementary statistical calculations such as Relative Risk, Sensitivity as well as understand what these terms mean.
In the left hand column are links to the definitions and the equations used in working out the result.
2) Understand terms: You need to know some statistical and epidemiological terms such as standard deviation, cohort studies. You are not required to carry out these calculations but you should be able to interpret the results. The list of these terms appear in the right hand column.
3) Quiz:
The best way to make sure you understand these terms is to practice the calculations and see whether or not you get them right, and to answer questions on epidemiology in the form of a quiz. To use the 'Quiz module' of this site, you will need to have a username and password to access the online e-learning tool 'Moodle'. Moodle is hosted by the East Midlands Post Graduate Medical Deanery.
