Welcome to the Haematology module.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Chris Fox, Consultant Haematologist
at the Nottingham City Hospital to act as our Expert Resource.

The teaching is divided into two sections.

1) Locality group Preparatory work. Wednesday
16th November 2011

From a General Practice perspective, we meet
the haematology interface in two connections
The first are patients who present in our
consulting rooms when we have the suspicion
of a haematological condition and arrange blood
tests in order to confirm or refute our suspicions
We come face to face with our knowledge or lack of it in our
second connection - the pathology (lab result) inbox.

I have put together real results from our patients at Kegworth over the past year
and ask you to look at the pathology lab results and answer the questions I have set.
I have also provided the "answers" to each set of questions.
In your groups, I would like you to attempt each of the questions and then refer to the answers I have written to each question to enable you to discuss theses cases further.

I have been involved in a very small way with a world wide project called "Map of Medicine". For those who have SystmOne Clinical systems in the the practice, "Map of Medicine" can be accessed for free. Map of Medicine attempts to provide a flow chart answer pathway to common clinical scenarios, for example the flow chart of a patient with chest pain, or AF. I have attached three flow charts for you to use to help you along the diagnosis and management of three haematological scenarios.
a) the decision tree for Anaemia (microcytic, normocytic and macrocytic)
b) the decision tree for iron deficiency anaemia
c) the decision tree for B12 and folate deficiency

2) Specialty Half day Wednesday 23rd November 2001. Clinical Sciences building, Nottingham City Hospital. 2pm to 4.30pm
Dr Chris Fox will be in a position to focus in on aspects of haematology from his point of view as he deals with our referrals to the haematology clinics emphasising important aspects of diagnosis and management as well as being in a position to answer any questions that arise from the locality teaching.
