Welcome to the Drug and Alcohol study day.
This module is designed to increase knowledge base and challenge preconceptions in the field of management of drugs and alcohol in primary care. Click here to read the intended curriculum outline and learning objectives for the module. The pre-course work is a pre-requisite for understanding the “Ask the Expert” day as the discussions and further teaching will not cover the same material but will assume that you already have some familiarity with the concepts.
The key messages contained and the learning outcomes are derived from the curriculum statement accessed via your e-portfolio and the resources suggested are from the RCGP e-learning component of the “Certificate in Management of Drug Misuse” Part 1. There is also further material included to enable you to increase your effectiveness in detection and brief intervention management of alcohol misuse.
The field is an embarrassment of riches with much academic research, clinical guidance and anecdotal evidence, however in order to provide you with a quick overview and identify tools that you can rapidly introduce into your clinical work, the material has been organised in the following manner:

There are two scenarios to work thru. The aim of the scenarios is to help familiarize yourself with some of the guidance on assessment and harm reduction principles as detailed by the “Orange book 2007 Drug Misuse and Dependence: UK guidelines on clinical management". additional reading below with links for those interested to learn more 1) If you wish to learn more about this area, you may wish to explore this link "Harm Reduction, Health and Well being for Substance Users".
